Cold and flu prevention

TipsFromDrShay

It’s that time of year again…cold and flu season seems to be as predictable as our rainy northwest weather. And while it is possible to feel like one, or both, is inevitable, they don’t have to be! Here are some tips to help prevent and treat colds and flu quickly:

  • Frequent hand washing: We’ve all heard it before but not everyone does. Washing hands frequently for at least 20 seconds is one of the best ways to prevent the spread of germs, from others to you and vice versa
  • Salt water: Gargling with salt water soothes a sore throat and helps wash viruses from the throat and stomach. Use 3/4 teaspoon of salt in 8 ounces of warm water, once per hour. Avoid using chlorinated tap water if possible
  • Teas: Ginger tea is great if you feel cold. Thinly slice fresh ginger root and put two slices into a cup of boiling water, steep and sip. Ginger tea can help with upper respiratory tract infections, coughs and bronchitis. If you feel warm try peppermint tea. You can drink it at room temperature or hot. You can make your own by steeping fresh mint leaves in boiling water. It can help relieve a sore throat and your clear sinuses
  • Supplements: Grapefruit Seed Extract (GSE) tablets and Olive Leaf Capsules are both naturally antiviral and antibacterial. Always take with food and be sure to check for interactions with any prescription medication you take
  • Epsom salt baths: Add 1 cup of Epsom salt and a few drops of lavender or eucalyptus essential oil to bath water. Soak for 10-15 minutes
  • Eucalyptus for travel: When flying or traveling via other crowded methods, put a few drops of Eucalyptus oil on a small cloth in a baggie. Inhale on and off throughout your trip—it has antiviral and antibacterial properties
  • Chiropractic care: Regular chiropractic treatments help your body facilitate lymphatic drainage and boost your immune function
